FREE LAND FOR PDX PROJECTS!!!
Second Life has become an enormous world, making it virtually (pardon the pun) impossible for people to connect with others who live in their local area... or who are trying to use SL to promote their own local neighborhoods or services.
For this reason, the NW 21st Avenue Project is now hosting an extensive free-lands area for projects related to the Portland, Oregon region on a first-come, first-serve basis. You can set up a shop to advertise your real life (RL) products or place of employment, promote your RL services, build a replica of a RL PDX location, provide a booth with a teleporter to your own SL-PDX related property, or even set up housekeeping in your own cabin and just hang out.
This way, anyone who comes to SL will have a central place to at least start their search for Portland-oriented projects. Those from other cities and other parts of the world will also be able to get a better feel for the very diverse, unique flavor of Portland's real life people, events, services, and culture through the Second Life experience.
BASIC GUIDELINES FOR QUALIFYING FOR FREE PDX LAND
* Understand that the land is yours to use free of charge, although actual ownership will be retained by the NW 21st Avenue Project and Ty Magpie.
* Plots can be sized from small stalls all the way up to 4,096 square meters, according to your project's requirements.
For guidelines and detailed information on how to qualify, visit Haetae (128,128) in-world and click one of the "Free Land Information" boxes found in the new RL/SL PDX plazas below the main NW 21st Avenue site (i.e., behind the intersection of NW 21st and Hoyt Street).

Jaycatt and Frogg mixed reality event at Beaulahland, PDX

Second Life residents from the Pacific Northwest are joyfully encouraged to attend this very special real life performance - meet not just Jaycatt and Frogg, but many other SL friends in the flesh!
Locals who have never experienced a concert using virtual reality systems are invited to come fly with us via the big screen at Beaulahland. People from all over the world will be tuning in via Second Life, so that Portlanders can dance alongside partiers from other states and countries in real time!
This event is hosted by fellow musician and podcaster RoseDrop Rust from Rosedrop Media Circus, Pannie Paperdoll from within SL, and promoted by Ty Magpie from the NW 21st Avenue Project.
Pannie and her husband have built a wonderful stage just for this event inside SL at her very popular club in Podul (244, 71, 106), here's a snapshot of Ty Magpie contemplating the fantastic swamp setting and the grand piano:

What is a mixed reality event??
MTV did a special feature on Frogg Marlowe, who will be playing alongside Jaycatt Nico at a RoseDrop Media Circus show on April 22nd here in PDX. The resulting MTV video will tell you tons about how musicians are reaching out to international audiences on a shoestring using virtual reality platforms... it's a must see, check it out at http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?name=news&id=1545799&vid=119658!
Yet the MTV special on Frogg told only part of the story.
A "mixed reality" event involves real people who play music, hold press conferences, conduct college or university classes, or host any number of other serious or playful activities in the real world while their audience members either attend in person or log on from computers anywhere in the world.
In this way, people from England or Africa or anywhere else can attend a performance being held in a small bar in Portland, for example. They can go to very real classes at Harvard University without ever leaving their own living rooms, or build replicas of their own little neighborhoods in the real world for the enjoyment of people very far away.
Mixed reality events demonstrate how virtual reality is being used as an awesome new, very interactive communications platform.

About the NW 21st Avenue Project
The NW 21st Avenue Project is meant to further blur the boundaries between the real world and virtual reality... by introducing visitors from all over the planet to the very real NW 21st Avenue small businesses people and in Portland, Oregon USA. Much like the popular Sister Cities programs already in places worldwide, this tiny NW 21st neighborhood is forging ahead to shape a new "Sister Worlds" partnership for encouraging entirely new kinds of "foreign exchange" activities.
The real NW 21st Avenue block between Hoyt and Irving Streets features the Cinema 21 movie theater, Gypsy's bar and restaurant, Muu Muu's bar, the CT Nails beauty salon, a Windermer real estate office, the Quick Stop convenience store, and a large gray-and-blue house on the corner. All of these buildings and small businesses are being reconstructed here in Second Life so those who have never been to Oregon can visit and experience a funky, friendly, "trademark Portland" neighborhood in all of it's quirky splendor. This video provides a sneak preview of construction efforts:
This project is different from many other virtual reality endeavors... because it is designed to help a neighborhood and small businesses in the real world, at little or no cost to the people there. This project is also providing Second Life residents with the opportunity to hone their skills, showcase their building abilities and other skills, and attend special events.
Once completed, this selected NW 21st block between Hoyt and Irving Streets will be a Second Life venue offering street parties, live music at Gypsy's and Muu Muu's, movies and documentaries at the theater, art festivals at the UFO Museum sidewalk shop, contests, and much more.
Click here to read more about it in the Oregonian! On April 1st, 2007, Oregonian reporter Steve Woodward wrote a fascinating article about Second Life from the Portland perspective, and provided his views of the developing NW 21st Avenue Project. Neat stuff!
Best regards,
